UNICEF Canada engaged Cantan Group to remediate the published documents on their website, including annual reports, pledge forms, and financial statements, ensuring compliance with accessibility legislation and guidelines.
The Challenge
Bringing an established, richly designed document library into full AODA compliance
Large Document Library
Over 30 documents spanning 650+ pages — annual reports, financial statements, and pledge forms — needed to meet AODA requirements.
Missing Source Files
Many originals were unavailable, so tables, charts, icons, and graphical elements had to be recreated from scratch before remediation could proceed.
Brand Integrity
UNICEF’s primary cyan had been used in ways that failed contrast requirements — accessibility fixes had to protect brand recognition.
Our Approach
Document reauthoring, vector illustration, and training delivered over months of iteration
Recreate
Tables, charts, icons, and graphical elements were rebuilt as native vector artwork so the documents could be structured correctly from the ground up.
Remediate
Legacy PDFs received full remediation against WCAG 2.1 AA — reading order, tagging, alternative text, and accessible form fields.
Harmonise
We devised techniques to keep UNICEF’s primary cyan visible on every document while meeting contrast requirements, preserving brand recognition throughout.
Educate
Hands-on training equipped UNICEF Canada staff with the skills to produce accessible documents in-house going forward.
